BNPB: One Sigi resident reported dead following Central Sulawesi earthquake

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported that one resident died as a result of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Central Sulawesi on Tuesday. “Based on reports compiled up to 19.00 WIB, one resident was reported dead in Sigi Regency,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, in Jakarta on Tuesday. According to data parameters from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was centred on land at coordinates 1.03 degrees South Latitude and 120.24 degrees East Longitude with a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was approximately 42 kilometres southeast of Palu City, 54 kilometres northeast of Sigi Regency, 70 kilometres northwest of Poso Regency, and 81 kilometres southeast of Donggala Regency. To date, approximately 312 people or 110 families in Central Sulawesi have been affected by the earthquake. Sigi Regency, where the fatality was found, is the area with the most significant impact. There, approximately 272 people or 89 families were affected by the earthquake, in addition to 22 residents suffering minor injuries and 13 residents suffering serious injuries. Another area that experienced quite significant impact was Parigi Moutong Regency, with 40 people or 21 families affected. Meanwhile, in Palu City, two residents were reported to have minor injuries, while in Poso Regency one resident was injured. The most damage was reported in Sigi Regency, with 47 houses affected, consisting of 23 houses with minor damage, six houses with moderate damage, and 12 houses with severe damage. In this area, six places of worship were also affected, two office buildings were affected, one bridge was affected, and one micro, small and medium enterprise (UMKM) suffered damage. In Poso Regency, five houses were affected, with three houses suffering minor damage. In Parigi Moutong Regency, 15 houses were affected, while in Palu City, cracks were reported on Bridge III, one public facility was affected, one hotel suffered damage, and one business premises was affected. Aftershock activity continued into the afternoon. BMKG recorded 55 aftershock activities around the main earthquake location up to 14.00 WIB.
