BNPB Mourns Passing of Gerak Bareng Foundation Founder Ahmad Zaki During Humanitarian Mission in NTT
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has expressed its deepest condolences over the death of Ahmad Zaki bin Ali, founder of the Gerak Bareng Foundation and a humanitarian volunteer. Ahmad Zaki passed away while carrying out a mission to assist communities affected by the earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT).
Acting Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, stated that the government also extended its sympathies over the loss of Ahmad Zaki, who fell in the line of humanitarian duty in Manggarai Regency.
“The government expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Ahmad Zaki bin Ali Hamzan, founder of the Gerak Bareng Foundation, a humanitarian volunteer who died while carrying out a mission to assist communities affected by the earthquake disaster,” said Berton in an official statement on the progress of disaster handling in NTT on Saturday (22/8).
According to reports received, Ahmad Zaki died on Friday (21/8) at 16.04 Wita. The deceased was known to have been at the Damer Post in Reok District, Manggarai Regency, to distribute aid and accompany residents affected by the earthquake.
BNPB expressed its highest appreciation and recognition for the dedication and service of the deceased across various disaster areas. Berton also conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
“To the wife, children and family of the deceased, may they be granted fortitude and sincerity,” Berton added.
The passing of Ahmad Zaki adds to the sorrow surrounding the handling of the impact of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck NTT on 15 August 2026. As of Saturday (22/8), emergency response efforts continue to be carried out collaboratively.
The government, through BNPB, together with regional governments, the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the Indonesian National Police, the National Search and Rescue Agency, and various volunteer elements, remains on the ground to continue the recovery process in a number of affected areas to ensure the basic needs of the community are met.
