The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has stated that the road access that was previously buried by landslide material from a cliff in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan, is now beginning to open and can be traversed by vehicles again.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that the land route in Tanjung Harapan Village, South Nunukan District, had been disrupted after the surrounding area was hit by floods and landslides.

β€˜The Nunukan Regency BPBD reported that the floods have receded and the road access affected by the landslide can still be passed by vehicles,’ he said.

He explained that the natural disaster was triggered by high-intensity rainfall accompanied by the overflowing of local rivers on Monday (1/6). The falling material from the collapsed cliff was reported to have previously covered part of the road, with a height of up to five metres and a landslide length of approximately 15 metres.

Based on reports received by the BNPB from the Nunukan BPBD rapid response team, 20 families in Tanjung Harapan were affected, with material losses recorded including at least 20 houses and one mosque.

Abdul ensured that personnel from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and other joint task force teams remain at the scene to ensure the basic needs of the survivors are met, while also minimising the risk of follow-up floods and landslides, as well as threats from wildlife such as crocodiles.
