The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has stated that the main area of the Jatiwaringin landfill in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten, which was affected by a fire covering approximately 15 hectares, has finally been extinguished. The fire was put out after 10 days.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Communication Centre, said the fire was successfully extinguished thanks to the hard work and collaboration of the emergency response team from the time the incident was reported on 30 June until Thursday evening. ‘The main area of the Jatiwaringin landfill, covering approximately 15 hectares, has been reported as 100 per cent extinguished and is currently in an intensive cooling phase,’ he said.

Abdul explained that although the main area within the landfill is under control, the joint team on the ground remains on alert to anticipate hotspots and thin plumes of smoke detected in the disposal area outside the landfill. ‘The joint team is still anticipating hotspots and thin plumes of smoke detected in the waste disposal area outside the landfill near a lake,’ he said.

Regarding the social conditions on the ground, the BNPB team confirmed that the situation for the community around the landfill is conducive, with zero evacuees as all residents have been facilitated to return to their respective homes.

BNPB had previously deployed four water-bombing helicopters to douse the hotspots with hundreds of thousands of litres of water. Three helicopters—a Mi-8AMT, a Sikorsky UH60A, and a Sikorsky UH60L—were reported to be operating optimally in rotation over Tangerang, while one Mi-8 MSBT helicopter was undergoing technical repairs. In addition to the aerial operation, BNPB also distributed emergency ground logistics, including 500 litres of Enviro Class A foam fire suppressant, dozens of mini pumps, hoses, and handheld radio communication devices.
