BNPB inaugurates emergency suspension bridge in Temanggung, Central Java

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has inaugurated the use of an emergency Bailey-type suspension bridge in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, to restore connectivity between villages following recent flash floods.

BNPB Head Suharyanto, in a statement in Jakarta on Friday, stated that the emergency bridge was constructed on a temporary basis to reopen mobility for residents who were previously isolated in Plosogaden Village, Candiroto District.

“This bridge is vital for the community. If not addressed immediately, the economic activities of residents would continue to be disrupted. We have collaborated with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to borrow and install this Bailey Bridge so that mobility can return to normal,” he said.

Suharyanto explained that repairing this crossing access is an urgent government priority because the main bridge in Plosogaden Village collapsed after being hit by flash flood overflows in mid-May 2026.

The collapse of the road infrastructure resulted in the severance of the main access connecting residential areas between the Banjaran Hamlet and the Sinongko Hamlet area.

The damage to the bridge caused approximately 161 households, or about 400 residents, to be left in isolation, according to data from the BNPB Directorate of Operations Control.

According to him, the BNPB acted swiftly to respond to the conditions reported by the Temanggung Regency Government by allocating an emergency budget stimulus sourced from the 2026 Available Rapid Response Fund (DSP) amounting to IDR 144 million.

This budget was used to finance the operational components of the assembly and installation of the emergency steel suspension bridge structure, which is designed with a span of 16.4 metres.

He noted that the construction process, which involved tactical synergy from 26 personnel of the TNI AD’s Yonzipur 4/Tanpa Kawandya unit alongside the collective efforts of local residents, was highly effective and completed in less than a month.

“Regarding the future status of the bridge, the BNPB leaves it entirely to the Temanggung Regency Government, whether to donate the Bailey Bridge as a regional asset or to dismantle it once a new permanent bridge is ready to be built,” he added.
