BNPB: Four rafts operated to accelerate flood response in North Konawe
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) states that a joint team is operating four wooden crossing raft units to accelerate the handling of flood impacts in North Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, following the continued isolation of one affected village.
Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, in Jakarta on Wednesday, said that the flooding which occurred since Monday (11/5) has made access to Tambakua Village in Landawe Sub-district still difficult to penetrate, even as the water pooling begins to gradually recede.
“To accelerate handling and support resident mobility as well as logistics distribution, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) along with the joint team is operating four crossing raft units at hard-to-access points,” he said.
The BNPB Operations Control Centre reported that the disaster has impacted 692 residents scattered across eight villages in six sub-district areas.
Starting from Sama Subur Village and Tondowatu Village in Motui Sub-district; Puuwonua Village, Labungga Village, and Laronanga Village in Andowia Sub-district; UPT Trans Hilau in Oheo Sub-district; Polora Indah Village in Langgikima Sub-district; and Tambakua Village in Landawe Sub-district.
In addition to submerging 148 housing units, the flood has also affected public infrastructure including two educational facilities, two bridge units, and four main road access points.
Residents’ agricultural sector has also suffered losses, with approximately 19 hectares of rice fields recorded as being inundated by the water overflow.
Abdul assured that the local regional government has activated field posts and distributed logistics aid to every temporary gathering location for survivors, as well as residents who are staying in their homes.
In that condition, it was reported that personnel from the joint team remain on standby under the coordination of the North Konawe BPBD and the local Police Resort to anticipate the potential for follow-up floods and ensure that all basic needs of the evacuees are met.
