BNPB: Fire in Mount Rinjani National Park Successfully Extinguished

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has announced that the forest and land fire (karhutla) affecting the savanna plains within the Mount Rinjani National Park area in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has been successfully extinguished.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, stated in Jakarta on Thursday that the swift action of joint teams on the ground allowed the fire to be controlled, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the conservation forest. The firefighting operation involved personnel from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), Manggala Agni, the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (BTNGR), as well as volunteers and local residents.

“Based on reports from the local BPBD, the fire has been successfully extinguished and the situation on the ground is currently declared stable,” he said. He explained that the fire, which struck the highland region of East Lombok Regency, was reported to have burnt 98.28 hectares of land.

While the BNPB has not yet provided a detailed report on the cause of the fire or the specific handling procedures, Abdul noted that according to received data, the main fire centre had been concentrated in the Propok Savanna tourist area of Mount Rinjani National Park since Wednesday night (3/6). Although the situation is reported to be safe, the BNPB continues to urge park management authorities and local governments to tighten patrols to anticipate the potential emergence of secondary hotspots caused by strong winds during the dry season.
