BNPB Emergency Funds Corruption Allegedly Dates Back to 2022
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) suspects that corruption involving the National Disaster Management Agency’s (BNPB) emergency funds has been taking place since 2022.
“Roughly three to four years back,” KPK chairman Setyo Budiyanto said in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, on Wednesday.
Setyo explained that BNPB’s emergency funds are generally used to meet urgent needs related to disasters.
“When there is a disaster, these emergency funds are used for urgent needs of an emergency nature. There are, of course, many things connected with disasters,” he said.
The KPK previously confirmed that it had conducted a sting operation at BNPB on 13 October 2026.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 14 people, including BNPB’s principal secretary, Rustian, and several private-sector individuals.
Rustian, however, was not named as a suspect in the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of goods and services, which is suspected to have been funded from the emergency budget for disaster response.
On 14 October 2026, the KPK named five people as suspects in the case.
One of them is Bima Setiawan, the younger brother of and an expert adviser to BNPB chief Lieutenant General Suharyanto.
According to information gathered, the other four suspects are Gabriel Purwaka Sigit, head of BNPB’s Subdirectorate for the Management of Assistance and Emergency Funds; Richard Erlangga, an expert adviser to the BNPB chief; and private-sector individuals Syifa Nrika Ghifarin and Gery Prasetiawan.
