The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has revealed it is employing special methods to extinguish a fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, which has been burning for more than a week. The agency noted that the fire requires a unique approach because the burning occurs deep within the waste piles, similar to peatland fires.

Brigadier General TNI Djohan Darmawan, Director of Emergency Operations Control at BNPB, stated that ground teams are using surface spraying and injection methods to soak the deep-seated embers. Aerial water bombing operations are also being conducted to douse the flames from above.

β€˜The water supply for the extinguishing efforts is supported by a nearby lake or reservoir, which makes it easier for helicopters to refill their buckets and for ground hoses to operate,’ Djohan said. Since Monday, ground operations have been extended until 10 p.m. local time to optimise the wetting process, with the hope that the internal fires will be fully extinguished soon.

As of Tuesday, the firefighting progress had reached 45 percent of the total 14-hectare affected area. Djohan used the incident as a warning for other regions, urging local governments to increase their preparedness for the 2026 dry season. He also appealed to the public not to burn household waste near residential areas to prevent similar disasters.
