BNPB Confirms Forest Fire on Mount Karanglo in Ponorogo Extinguished

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has confirmed that a forest and land fire (karhutla) that struck the Mount Karanglo area in Ponorogo Regency, East Java, has been completely extinguished by a joint team.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Communication Centre, stated on Friday in Jakarta that the fire occurred on Wednesday afternoon (22/7). “The East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has confirmed that the fire hotspot on Mount Karanglo has been successfully controlled and extinguished by the joint team in the field,” he said.

The fire location was specifically in the area of Karanglo Kidul Village, Jambon District, Ponorogo Regency. Based on a rapid assessment by the East Java BPBD, the total area of land scorched by the flames is estimated to be around two hectares.

Abdul Muhari assured that the incident resulted in no casualties, as the fire point was located quite far from local residential areas. Nevertheless, the joint team remains on standby to anticipate the potential emergence of new hotspots triggered by dry weather conditions during the current dry season.

“BNPB urges local governments and the public to increase their vigilance against the potential dangers of dry hydrometeorology during the dry season, including drought and forest and land fires,” he added. Local governments are expected to continue strengthening preparedness, ensuring the availability of clean water, and optimising disaster risk reduction measures.
