BNPB: Area Burned in Mount Bromo Region Reaches 60 Hectares

The area of land burned in the Mount Bromo region of East Java has reached approximately 60 hectares, according to a report from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on Thursday morning.

Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre Abdul Muhari said the extent of land affected by the forest and land fires is spread across the administrative areas of Probolinggo Regency and Malang Regency.

In Probolinggo Regency, he continued, the fire burned around 10 hectares of land in the Watu Gede area, Sariwani Village, Sukapura District. Meanwhile, in Malang Regency, the fire burned 50 hectares of the Jantur area within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS).

The burned area was calculated based on preliminary estimates by the joint task force team as of Wednesday, 5 August 2026.

Abdul Muhari explained that the forest and land fire affecting the Mount Bromo conservation area was first detected on Monday evening, 3 August. To date, there have been no reports of casualties in the forest and land fire incident in the Bromo area.

Emergency response efforts continue to be carried out by a joint team involving the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the TNBTS Central Office, Forestry Police (Polhut), and volunteers, deploying fire engines and water tankers.

He added that some fire spots, such as in the Bantengan Block and Pusung Jantur, were declared successfully extinguished, but personnel are still hampered by steep terrain on the slopes of the Bromo Caldera and strong winds.

To optimise ground firefighting efforts, Abdul Muhari said, East Java BPBD personnel have deployed drones to map the distribution of fire spots in hard-to-reach areas, starting from around the caldera to the boundary marker between Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency.
