BNPB Accelerates Sumatra Recovery After Disasters, Temporary Housing 99.9% Complete
Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto, has stated that the Sumatra region is now in the recovery phase following recent disasters. The government is accelerating the provision of housing for affected residents.
In a press statement, Suharyanto reported on the progress of post-hydrometeorological disaster recovery, which has now entered its seventh month. He noted that no provinces in Sumatra remain under emergency response status, with only a few districts or cities still in the transition phase from emergency to recovery.
Suharyanto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to speeding up the provision of temporary housing (huntara) and permanent housing (huntap). The central government, together with the House of Representatives (DPR), has allocated Rp 100.1 trillion for post-disaster recovery in Sumatra over a three-year period (2026-2028).
These funds are designated for rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The work includes infrastructure repairs, rehabilitation of damaged houses, community economic recovery, and strengthening mitigation and environmental restoration.
“This means that ministries which were previously waiting can now begin working,” Suharyanto said in a statement on Monday (22/6/2026).
He clarified that this budget is separate from the disaster management funds managed by BNPB through the Dana Siap Pakai (DSP) or Ready-to-Use Fund scheme. Since the initial emergency response phase, BNPB has been equipped with a DSP of approximately Rp 4 trillion, used for various disaster management needs across the country.
The DSP is allocated for various responsibilities under BNPB, including logistics provision, construction of temporary housing, construction of independent permanent housing, housing waiting funds, and stimulus funds for houses with light to moderate damage.
“We ensure that these funds are used in a targeted, transparent, and accountable manner through technical assistance to local governments, supervision of aid distribution, and cross-ministerial/institutional coordination,” he explained.
Entering the seventh month post-disaster, BNPB has completed the provision of huntara in various locations and is now focusing on the construction of huntap. The target for huntara construction was more than 20,000 units.
“We have completed 99.9% of the huntara construction. The remaining work, according to our data, is for affected residents who do not have land or building rights, or those who were renting,” he added.
Furthermore, BNPB is working on the construction of independent or in-situ permanent housing. Suharyanto stated that BNPB has currently started building around 900 houses. The total target for permanent housing construction, both independent and communal, is 39,000 units.
BNPB is also continuing other supporting programmes. The stimulus fund programme for repairing houses with light to moderate damage has been distributed in three phases in Aceh Tamiang and two phases in North Aceh.
“This stimulus fund will continue to be provided based on requests from regional heads. If there is a request and it is verified, we will provide the funds again,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Housing Waiting Fund (DTH) of Rp 1.8 million per three months has been distributed to thousands of family heads and will continue for up to six months. He noted that various logistics, economic recovery, and other supporting programmes are ongoing.
“We certainly have many shortcomings and weaknesses. As the Head of BNPB, I acknowledge that. But we are determined to fix these shortcomings and weaknesses and strive to help the community,” he concluded.
