BNPB: 31 aftershocks recorded after M 7.7 earthquake in NTT

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto said that 31 aftershocks occurred on Saturday following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

“The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has provided information that as of 3 p.m. today, 31 aftershocks have occurred,” Suharyanto said during an online press conference in Jakarta on Saturday.

Of the 31 aftershocks, four were recorded as having fairly significant magnitudes.

“The first significant aftershock had a magnitude of 6.2 at 5.13 a.m., almost the same as the first earthquake, at a depth of 10 km and still located at sea,” he said.

The third earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 at a depth of 10 km below the sea at 5.28 a.m.

The fourth aftershock had a magnitude of 5.6 at 5.37 a.m.

“These significant aftershocks occurred in the morning. Since 7 a.m. until now, there have been no more earthquakes with large magnitudes,” Suharyanto said.

Previously, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Saturday at 4.58 a.m. Western Indonesia Time.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had issued a tsunami early warning, but the warning ended at 7.30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time.

Updated data as of Saturday at 3 p.m. Western Indonesia Time showed that the earthquake caused 38 deaths, two people with serious injuries, and 11 others with minor injuries.
