BNPB: 232 People Displaced by Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has stated that 232 people have been displaced by the fire at the Jatiwaringin final disposal site (TPA) in Tangerang Regency. They are seeking refuge to avoid the adverse effects of the thick smoke from the blaze. “They have evacuated to the Tanjakan Mekar Village Hall,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Communication Centre, in a written statement on Sunday, 5 July 2026. The evacuees include 60 children, 7 elderly people, 1 pregnant woman, 137 adults, 26 toddlers, and 1 person with a disability. He added that the government is providing logistical assistance, such as mattresses for the displaced, and a medical team is on standby 24 hours a day. Abdul Muhari reported that 15 hectares of the Jatiwaringin landfill have been affected by the fire. Approximately 40 per cent of the area has been extinguished and is undergoing cooling operations. Firefighting efforts are being conducted via both land and air routes. “Efforts are still ongoing for the remaining 60 per cent of the burned area, which has not yet been fully extinguished but is under control,” he said. The fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency first broke out on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. In an official statement, the Ministry of Environment suspected the fire was triggered by hot weather conditions, which caused a hotspot in the waste pile that then spread. However, the exact cause is still under investigation. “The exact cause will be investigated once the emergency situation is under control,” the Ministry said in its statement. The Tangerang Regency Health Office recorded that 154 residents have suffered from acute respiratory infections (ISPA) due to exposure to smoke from the Jatiwaringin landfill fire. Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, stated that the central government has intervened to assist the affected communities.
