BNPB: 232 Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Evacuees Return Home
Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Communication Centre, stated that 232 residents who had been displaced by the fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency have now returned to their homes. Only 15 people remain in temporary shelters.
Abdul Muhari explained that the 232 residents returned home on Sunday morning (5/7/2026). They had previously sought refuge at the local village office. "Last night, 232 people were sheltering at the Tanjakan Mekar Village Office, and this morning they returned to their respective homes. Fifteen people remain," said Abdul Muhari when contacted on Sunday.
Muhari stated that his agency is continuing to supply necessities to the affected community. He noted that the fire is still 60 per cent ablaze. "BNPB continues to support the logistics for evacuees according to field needs. As of this morning, 40 per cent of the burned area has been extinguished and is entering the cooling phase. We hope today’s firefighting operations can suppress the remaining 60 per cent that is still burning to reduce the smoke," he said.
Muhari explained that the 15 people who have not yet returned home live closest to the fire site, making their residences currently unsafe to occupy. "Yes, their homes are the closest to the landfill site," he clarified.
Efforts to extinguish the fire are being ramped up with the addition of water-bombing helicopters. BNPB will add two more helicopters, bringing the total to four units, which will be repositioned to accelerate firefighting operations.
Regarding weather modification operations, Muhari stated that they are not feasible for the next week due to the absence of adequate rain clouds. Nevertheless, BNPB is keeping one weather modification aircraft on standby, ready to operate should rain clouds become available.
The fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has been burning since Tuesday (30/6). The Tangerang Regency Government has declared an emergency response status as the fire has spread, with the total burned area of the landfill reaching approximately 15 hectares.
