BNPB: 2,533 Homes Damaged by Earthquake in Sigi, Central Sulawesi

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded that 2,533 homes were damaged by the earthquake in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, which was followed by more than a thousand aftershocks since the main quake on 16 June 2026.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, stated in Jakarta on Thursday that the accumulated aftershock activity data was compiled based on records from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) up to Tuesday (23/6) at midnight local time.

“Of the total 1,349 aftershocks that occurred, 49 were felt by the community, with the largest recorded at a magnitude of 5.3,” he said.

Despite the high number of aftershocks, BMKG noted that the aftershock activity in the field is currently showing a significant downward trend.

Meanwhile, updated provisional data indicates that 3,600 families, or 9,609 individuals, in Sigi Regency have been affected by the disaster, with all reported injuries having received medical treatment and recovered.

The breakdown of building damage includes 1,979 homes with light damage, 277 with moderate damage, and 277 with severe damage. Additionally, 110 places of worship were damaged, comprising 29 mosques and 81 churches.

To manage the disaster’s impact, the Sigi Regency Government has established a 14-day Earthquake Emergency Response Status, effective from 16 to 30 June 2026, with full support from BNPB and all stakeholders to prepare for the rehabilitation and reconstruction phases.

Abdul added that 50 temporary shelters (huntara) are currently under construction to accommodate earthquake survivors. The first phase of these temporary shelters is being built centrally in Kamarora Village, Nokilalaki District, Sigi Regency.
