BNPB: 13 suspension bridges destroyed by floods in Sintang

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has announced the destruction of 13 suspension bridges due to floodwaters in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan.

The Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communications Centre, BNPB Abdul Muhari, in Jakarta, on Thursday, said that the infrastructure damage occurred after floodwaters that have inundated the area since Sunday (17 May).

‘There have been 13 suspension bridges destroyed and one main access road remains submerged,’ he said.

The destruction of these bridges presents a challenge for the rapid-response teams on the ground to distribute emergency aid, particularly in the Kayan Hilir district.

Based on updated data received by BNPB, the number of affected people is 5,078 households, and five houses among those were severely damaged.

The flood survivors are residents from 15 villages, including Nanga Toran and Pakak in Kayan Hulu; Landau Beringin and Nanga Mau in Kayan Hilir; and Sungai Sintang and Bengkuang in Kelam Permai.

Currently, Abdul said, the rapid-response teams of the Sintang Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) are still coordinating emergency response at the scene.
