BNPB: 1,160 Sangihe Islands Residents Affected by Earthquake, Still Displaced

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded that 1,160 residents in the Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, have been affected by the earthquake.

According to the Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, the Sangihe Islands Regency has been significantly impacted. “A total of 1,160 individuals who were previously reported to be evacuating at the homes of nearby relatives have, in part, returned to their respective houses,” Muhari stated in a briefing on Wednesday (10/6).

Based on BNPB data, following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, aftershocks continued to occur as of Tuesday (9/6) at approximately 09:00 WIB. “Small-magnitude aftershocks are still occurring in the affected areas,” he added.

Meanwhile, the electricity supply in Sangihe Regency has gradually returned to normal following the disaster, except for the outermost islands located near the earthquake’s epicentre. Damage to buildings in the Sangihe Islands Regency includes 54 heavily damaged houses, 21 moderately damaged houses, and eight lightly damaged houses. Additionally, two churches, one school, and one teacher’s official residence have also sustained damage, he revealed.

In the Talaud Regency, 12 houses, one hospital, and one port warehouse were recorded as being affected by the earthquake, impacting 12 families. Furthermore, in North Minahasa Regency, Muhari noted that one GMIM 76 church building and one educational facility were also affected by the earthquake.
