North Aceh Police chief shot: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a convoy of cars carrying Aceh Governor Abdullah Puteh and his entourage in Simpang Leubu village in Gandapura district on Thursday, wounding two officers, including North Aceh Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sunardi. Medical workers said Sunardi was shot in his head and was rushed to hospital in Bireun by helicopter. Puteh, returning to Banda Aceh after a peace promotion, was uninjured in the afternoon ambush, which security authorities blamed on the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM). GAM spokesman Tengku Jamaika refused to comment on the incident which comes just after planned talks with Jakarta in Geneva were delayed indefinitely. -- JP
