BNNP DKI Jakarta educates on drug abuse in e-cigarettes
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Narcotics Agency of Jakarta Province (BNNP DKI) has provided education on drug misuse in e-cigarettes or vapes through a national seminar held in commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse (HANI) 2026.
The national seminar carried the theme “E-Cigarette Circulation Governance: Dangers, Supervisory Synergy, and Prevention of Narcotics Misuse in E-Cigarettes”.
“The problem with vapes lies not only in the device itself, but also in the substances contained within it. Today, various methods of narcotics misuse through vapes continue to develop and require stronger anticipatory measures,” said the Head of BNN, Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto, at the national seminar in South Jakarta on Monday.
Suyudi stressed that the e-cigarette issue must be viewed comprehensively, from upstream to downstream, involving all stakeholders.
Beyond the health impacts caused, e-cigarettes have become a serious concern because they are increasingly being found as a vehicle for narcotics misuse through liquids containing illegal substances.
“This event brings together a number of speakers from government, legislative, regulatory, academic, and professional bodies to discuss the rising use of e-cigarettes (vapes), particularly among the younger generation, as well as the potential for their misuse as a medium for narcotics consumption,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), Habiburokhman, said the DPR supports efforts to draw up more comprehensive regulations concerning the supervision and control of e-cigarettes.
According to him, BNN has a strategic role as the leading sector in formulating policy measures to protect the public, especially the younger generation, from the threat of narcotics misuse through vape devices.
Furthermore, the Indonesian Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, emphasised the importance of protecting public health as the top priority.
Controlling e-cigarette consumption is expected to support improvements in public health quality and help achieve the national target for increased life expectancy.
The seminar also highlighted the growing threat of narcotics misuse through e-cigarettes, including the discovery of a case involving cannabis flowers allegedly intended for processing into vape liquids.
The finding indicates that vape devices have been exploited by narcotics trafficking networks using increasingly complex and difficult-to-detect methods.
Through this seminar, BNNP DKI Jakarta hopes to build a shared understanding and strengthen cross-sectoral synergy in supervising e-cigarettes, preventing narcotics misuse, and protecting the younger generation and educational environments from various threats posed by addictive substances and narcotics.
