BNN Urges Komdigi to Block Accounts and Sites Linked to Narcotics Crime
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Indonesia hopes the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) will strengthen collaboration through faster information exchange and the blocking of accounts and websites suspected of being linked to narcotics crime. BNN Chief Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto highlighted the vulnerability of the productive age group, who are active internet users, to exposure to narcotics crime in the digital space. “Technological developments have been exploited by narcotics networks to carry out various illegal activities covertly through social media, e-commerce, and even the dark web,” he stated in Jakarta on Saturday. He also revealed a connection between online gambling and narcotics networks, which often intersect in money laundering practices. He assessed that as information technology advances, the modus operandi of narcotics crime has evolved, utilising various digital platforms for promotion and transactions. In response to this threat, the BNN Chief held a meeting with Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid in Jakarta on Thursday (11 June) to strengthen synergy in monitoring and handling narcotics crime in the digital realm. Beyond surveillance and enforcement, Suyudi also encouraged stronger collaboration in public communication. As an institution with a strategic role in managing national information and the digital space, Komdigi is expected to support narcotics prevention efforts by enhancing educational campaigns and disseminating information about the dangers of drug abuse to the public. Minister Meutya Hafid welcomed the BNN’s initiative and expressed her commitment to strengthening coordination in handling content and sites related to narcotics crime. The ministry is also ready to facilitate the accelerated blocking of prohibited accounts and sites, as well as expand collaboration in spreading educational messages about the dangers of narcotics to the public. This effort is part of a shared commitment to protect the digital space from illegal activities while improving public literacy in facing cyber threats. Going forward, BNN and Komdigi agreed to follow up on the meeting by strengthening synergy to tackle the threat of narcotics crime in the digital era, through cyber surveillance, handling illegal content, and enhancing public literacy. This synergy is expected to support the creation of a digital space safe from drug abuse while increasing public awareness of the dangers of narcotics.
