The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) together with Rabithah Ma’ahid Islamiyah (RMI) NU DKI Jakarta has highlighted the dangers of vaping among santri. According to BNN, the substances contained in vapes are unclear and harmful.

BNN and RMI NU DKI held a seminar entitled “Vape in Danger” which spotlighted the serious impacts of electronic cigarette use among santri on Friday (17/4). The event took place in the Cilandak area, South Jakarta, with the theme of Socialisation of the Dangers of Vaping for Pesantren.

In its statement, the event featured several figures, including the Chairman of RMI NU DKI Jakarta, KH Rahmad Zaelani Kiki, as the host, the General Chairman of Barisan Ksatria Nusantara (BKN), Gus Rofi, who also acted as host, and Inspector General Agus Irianto, representing the Head of BNN, Suyudi Ario Seto.

KH Rahmad Zaelani Kiki emphasised the importance of the role of pesantren as a fortress for the moral and health of the ummah. According to him, education regarding the dangers of vaping must be intensified so that santri have awareness from an early age to avoid self-destructive things.

Meanwhile, Inspector General Agus Irianto revealed various BNN findings related to vapes. He explained that physically, the shape of vapes often resembles narcotic consumption devices, thus having the potential for misuse.

In addition, in several cases, indications of harmful contents were found, such as heavy metals and the possibility of narcotic substances like liquid cannabis mixed in through illegal laboratories.

“The substances entering the body through vapes are not fully known. The content of metals and chemicals can damage body cells, affect the heart, and disrupt the oxygen supply that should function for cell regeneration,” said Inspector General Agus Irianto in his statement on Saturday (18/4/2026).

During the seminar, an elderly father voluntarily came forward to give testimony. He recounted losing his son and nephew who died after using vapes for about one year.

Both suffered serious lung disorders and within two weeks, their lives could not be saved.

The testimony moved all participants. In response, Inspector General Agus Irianto stated that real stories like this are very important to be conveyed to the public at large.

“On 26 June, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse, we will specially invite this father to give testimony,” he revealed.
