PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI has urged customers using its BNIdirect cash and BNIdirect business services to be more vigilant against various fraud schemes misusing the company’s name. These schemes include requests for account access data, token codes, and invitations to install certain applications under the pretext of verification or technical assistance. “Be alert, requests for account data, passwords, email addresses, Hard/Soft Token codes, OTP codes, or other information via telephone, SMS, email, or social media are fraudulent,” said BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo in a written statement in Jakarta. He added that BNI never asks customers to disclose confidential data such as corporate user IDs, user IDs, company names, passwords, email addresses, Hard Token or Soft Token codes, OTP codes, or other sensitive information through telephone, SMS, email, social media, or any unofficial channel. Hard Token and Soft Token codes are only used to authorise transactions on the official BNIdirect cash and BNIdirect business websites, meaning no identity verification process requires customers to reveal token codes to any other party. Criminals often use the excuse of account verification to obtain critical data from customers. Once they have this data, perpetrators can potentially take over accounts or process unauthorised transactions in the customer’s name. “Firmly refuse or immediately end the conversation if any party requests your corporate ID, user ID, and company name under the pretext of verification,” Okki said. “Remember that if this data is given, criminals can easily breach BNIdirect cash and BNIdirect business accounts,” he added. Beyond data requests, BNI also asks customers not to follow instructions to install certain applications on their computers or laptops under the guise of technical support. These applications may include remote desktop software that allows criminals to access the customer’s device from a distance. Perpetrators also frequently apply psychological pressure by telling customers that their BNIdirect cash or BNIdirect business accounts will be blocked shortly. BNI stressed that the company does not block accounts via telephone calls. Okki urged customers to remain calm if they receive suspicious messages or calls and to immediately verify through BNI’s official channels to avoid the risk of data misuse and unauthorised transactions. “Contact BNI Call at 1500046 or the Service Action Team at 021-29946046, or via WhatsApp at 0858 5000 1946, and verify your BNIdirect cash or BNIdirect business account with the assisting officer,” he said. BNI emphasised that the security of digital services is a shared responsibility between the bank and its customers. Therefore, customers are expected to always maintain the confidentiality of their personal data and banking access information, and to use only official BNI channels to obtain information and assistance regarding BNIdirect services.
