BNI Admits Oversight in Rp 28 Billion Embezzlement Case, Customer Funds Guaranteed Safe
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBNI) has admitted to an oversight in the case of the embezzlement of funds belonging to members of the Credit Union (CU) Paroki Aek Nabara, Rantauprapat, North Sumatra, amounting to Rp 28 billion.
This state-owned bank stated that the case also harms the company.
BNI’s Director of Human Capital & Compliance, Munadi Herlambang, said that the amount of loss refers to the latest developments in the police investigation.
“We have conducted initial verification and coordination with law enforcement authorities. We have returned Rp 7 billion in the initial stage, and BNI is also among those affected by this incident,” Munadi stated during an online press conference on Sunday (18/4/2026).
Munadi explained that this case involves actions by rogue individuals who conducted transactions outside the official banking system and authority.
The product used in this practice is also confirmed not to be an official BNI product and is not recorded in the company’s operational system.
Nevertheless, BNI reaffirms its commitment to resolving the return of customer funds.
The return process will be carried out based on the results of the law enforcement investigation and formalised in a legal agreement between the relevant parties.
As an initial step, BNI has returned Rp 7 billion to CU Paroki Aek Nabara.
“We have made an initial return of Rp 7 billion, and the remainder will be settled this week,” Munadi said.
He added that the resolution of this case is being handled with principles of transparency, accountability, and prudence to provide legal certainty for all parties.
On the other hand, BNI assures that customer funds held in official products remain safe and unaffected by this case.
