BMW sales in Asia surge
SINGAPORE (AFP): German auto-maker BMW said yesterday its car
sales in Asia, excluding Japan, surged 30 percent above the
previous year to 13,453 units in January-June despite a slowdown
in Thailand and South Korea.
But turmoil in regional currency markets would depress overall
passenger car sales in the second half, BMW said.
China, Taian and Indonesia were the star performers among
BMW's regional markets in the firs half, with car registrations
jumping 258 percent, 55 percent and 41 percent respectively over
the same period of 1996.
BMW deliveries in Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and
Singapore grew by more than 30 percent each, and in Taiwan by 55
percent, according to a statement released by Singapore-based BMW
Asia Pte. Ltd.
