BMW Indonesia Optimistic about Upturn in Premium Car Market Trend in Q2
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The national automotive market, particularly in the premium vehicle segment, is still facing considerable challenges in early 2026. Nevertheless, BMW Group Indonesia is highly optimistic about market growth in the near term.
President Director of BMW Group Indonesia, Peter Medalla, acknowledges that current sales performance has not yet surpassed the achievements of the same period last year. However, he sees positive trends in consumer interest.
“So, we’re still below last year. But we see more than that; there’s a build-up of orders leading into Q2,” said the man familiarly known as Sunny, to reporters, when met on the sidelines of the Festival of Joy at JIExpo Kemayoran on Friday (17/4/2026).
Sunny predicts a turnaround in the period from April to June ahead. According to him, the sales data base from last year for that period was quite low, opening wide opportunities for year-on-year growth.
Looking back, he mentioned that the first half of 2025 was a highly volatile period for the automotive industry both globally and domestically.
“Last year, many external factors caused declines across the entire automotive industry. The whole of April, May, June was very tough for everyone,” he said.
Macroeconomic conditions were cited as the main factor pressuring the purchasing power of the upper class last year. International political turmoil and weakening currency exchange rates made consumers tend to hold back on purchasing luxury goods.
Sunny said that last year there were US President Donald Trump’s economic policies, a significant drop in shares, and of course, weakening currency. The combination of all that led to a very large decline.
Entering this year, BMW Group Indonesia is relying on momentum from various marketing activities and automotive exhibitions to maintain market enthusiasm.
“Q2 will be very similar to Q1, where there was momentum. At the end of last year, there was the Festival of Joy, followed by the very successful IIMS. So, in the end, our investment in showcasing our cars to the public is still successful,” he said.
The presence of the latest units at the Festival of Joy event at JIExpo Kemayoran is expected to serve as a catalyst for growth in BMW vehicle booking numbers (SPK) in Indonesia, while strengthening their dominance in the premium car segment.
