BMW begins producing Gen6 batteries in China
Jakarta (ANTARA) – German carmaker BMW has begun producing Gen6 high-voltage batteries at its factory in Shenyang, China.
According to an Arena EV report on Thursday (15 October), BMW’s Shenyang plant is its third production facility for Gen6 batteries, following sites in Debrecen, Hungary, and Strasskirchen, Germany.
The facilities are part of BMW’s Gen6 battery production network, which is planned to expand to Woodruff in the United States and San Luis Potosí in Mexico.
BMW’s Gen6 batteries are a key component of models in its Neue Klasse electric vehicle range.
Compared with the previous generation, Gen6 offers 20 per cent higher energy density and improvements of around 30 per cent in charging speed and driving range.
The new cell-to-pack manufacturing method allows cylindrical cells to be integrated directly into the battery housing. This reduces the space required for installation while allowing the battery to be integrated flexibly into different types of vehicle.
Gen6 batteries are currently used only in the BMW iX3 and i3. The iX4 and several iX5 configurations, due to be introduced in early 2027, will also use the technology.
