Bandung (ANTARA) - The Bandung Class 1 Geophysics Station of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 136 earthquake events in West Java and its surrounding areas during May 2026.

“Of the 136 events, the largest recorded earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6, while the smallest was 0.8,” said Bandung BMKG Geophysics Station Chief Edi Wibowo in Bandung on Monday.

According to depth, he added, 121 earthquakes occurred at less than 60 kilometres depth and 15 between 60 and 300 kilometres.

Regarding the hypocentre locations, he stated that 65 earthquakes originated offshore, while 71 occurred on land.

Edi further explained that one of the earthquakes felt in May was a 4.6-magnitude event in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, on 21 May 2026, which was felt in Garut, Ciamis, and Tasikmalaya regencies.

“Considering the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquakes were shallow events caused by active fault activity,” he said.

He urged the public to remain calm and vigilant during earthquakes, follow BPBD instructions, and rely on BMKG information.

“We advise the public to stay calm and vigilant during earthquakes and not to be swayed by irresponsible rumours,” Edi Wibowo added.
