Bandung (ANTARA) – The Bandung Geophysical Station of Class 1 BMKG has recorded that during February 2026 there were 108 earthquake events in West Java and the surrounding area. Of the 108 events, the largest ground shaking recorded was magnitude 6.4, while the smallest was 0.9, said Teguh Rahayu, head of BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station, in Bandung on Thursday. Teguh said, based on depth, 93 earthquakes had a focal depth of less than 60 kilometres, and 15 events were between 60 and 300 kilometres. Throughout February there were seven earthquakes felt, he said. He noted that by hypocentre location, 58 earthquakes were centred at sea, while 50 events were inland. Furthermore, Teguh said one felt earthquake in February had a magnitude of 3 and was centred in Cimahi, West Java, on Friday (6 February), felt in Bandung Regency, Subang, Bandung city, and Sumedang Regency. Taking into account the epicentre location and depth, the earthquakes that occurred were shallow earthquakes caused by the activity of active faults, he said. BMKG Bandung issued guidance for the public to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by earthquakes. If an earthquake occurs, the public should remain calm, be vigilant, and follow the directions of the local Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD), as well as information from BMKG. We urge that if an earthquake occurs the public remain calm, be vigilant, and not be swayed by irresponsible rumours, said Teguh.
