BMKG: West Java Hit by 195 Earthquakes in August 2026, Pangandaran Largest

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Class 1 Bandung Geophysical Station has reported significant seismic activity in the West Java region throughout August 2026. A total of 195 earthquake incidents were recorded in the area and its surroundings.

The Head of the BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station, Suaidi Ahadi, detailed that the magnitudes of these 195 events varied. “The largest earthquake recorded was 5.3 magnitude, while the smallest was 1.0 magnitude,” Suaidi stated in Bandung on Tuesday (1/9).

Based on BMKG statistical data, the majority of the earthquakes were shallow. Specifically, 176 incidents had an epicentre depth of less than 60 kilometres, while 19 other incidents were recorded at intermediate depths between 60 and 300 kilometres.

Despite the hundreds of occurrences, not all earthquakes in West Java were felt by the public. Suaidi noted that tremors were only felt on 18 occasions throughout the August period.

One of the most notable periods of seismic activity occurred on Wednesday, 5 August 2026. The 5.3 magnitude earthquake was centred in Pangandaran Regency. The impact of the tremors was reported to be felt widely, covering the regions of Garut, Ciamis, and Tasikmalaya.

BMKG has issued a recommendation to the public, with Suaidi urging citizens not to be easily swayed by unverified information or hoaxes regarding earthquake activity in West Java.
