BMKG Warns of Weekend Weather Shift: Jakarta to Surabaya Forecast for Light Rain
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that most parts of Indonesia will experience light rain over the weekend, on Sunday, 21 June 2026. These conditions are predicted to occur in a number of major cities from Sumatra to Papua.
BMKG forecaster Sastia said the majority of large cities in Indonesia have the potential to be drenched by rain of light intensity. The public is urged to remain attentive to weather developments before engaging in outdoor activities.
Several areas on Sumatra Island expected to see light rain include Medan in North Sumatra, Tanjung Pinang in the Riau Islands, Padang in West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, Palembang in South Sumatra, and Pangkal Pinang in the Bangka Belitung Islands.
Meanwhile, areas on Java Island with the potential for light rain include Serang in Banten, Jakarta, Semarang in Central Java, and Surabaya in East Java.
In Kalimantan, light rain is forecast for Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, and Samarinda in East Kalimantan.
BMKG also predicts light rain will fall in several parts of eastern Indonesia. The cities of Mataram in West Nusa Tenggara, Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara, Palu in Central Sulawesi, Sorong in Southwest Papua, and Nabire in Central Papua are on the list of areas with potential for light rain.
According to Sastia, these weather conditions need to be anticipated by the public, especially those with land or sea travel activities during the weekend.
In addition to light rain, BMKG also noted areas with the potential for higher intensity rain or other weather phenomena. The agency warned of potential rain accompanied by lightning in several parts of Indonesia. The cities of Pekanbaru in Riau, Pontianak in West Kalimantan, and Tanjung Selor in North Kalimantan are forecast to experience rain with lightning or thunder. Furthermore, the potential for lightning is also expected in Bandar Lampung. Residents in these areas are asked to increase their vigilance against the possibility of extreme weather that can occur in a short time.
