BMKG Warns of Thunderstorms in Several Major Indonesian Cities, Here Are the Affected Areas
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to be vigilant for potential extreme weather in the form of thunderstorms and light rain in several major cities on Sunday, 26 July 2026. BMKG forecaster Miftah stated in a weather broadcast in Jakarta on Sunday that the western part of Indonesia should be alert for potential thunderstorms in Tanjung Selor, as well as light rain in Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Tanjung Pinang, and Jambi. Despite the rain warnings, BMKG predicts that most other cities in the western region will be dominated by cloudy to heavily cloudy conditions. Miftah mentioned that cloudy weather is likely to cover the areas of Bengkulu, Palembang, Pangkalpinang, Bandar Lampung, all regions of Java, Pontianak, Palangkaraya, and Samarinda. In addition to cloud cover and rainfall, he also noted the specific potential for hazy conditions in the Banjarmasin area. Turning to weather monitoring in the eastern part of Indonesia, BMKG also forecasts evenly distributed light rainfall in several areas. For the eastern region, light rain is expected in Denpasar, Mataram, Mamuju, Palu, Manado, and Jayawijaya. Meanwhile, partly cloudy, cloudy, to heavily cloudy conditions are predicted to dominate other eastern areas, including Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke.
