BMKG Warns of Strong El Niño, Raising Forest Fire Risk in East Java

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) East Java Climatology Station is warning all areas in the province to be vigilant for a strong El Niño, which will reduce rainfall and trigger an increased potential for forest and land fires (karhutla). BMKG East Java Climatology Station forecaster Linda Fitrotul in Malang Regency on Thursday said the indication of a strong El Niño is due to the sea surface temperature anomaly in the eastern Pacific Ocean (Nino 3.4) being above +2 degrees Celsius. “The impact to watch out for is reduced rainfall and a drier dry season, as it can cause longer days without rain, increase the potential for drought, reduce water availability for agriculture and community needs, and increase the risk of forest and land fires,” Linda said. The combination of these conditions, according to her, will ultimately cause the dry season in Indonesia to be drier than normal. The BMKG East Java Climatology Station estimates the dry season in the province will last until early 2027. The public is also reminded not to clear land or gardens by using fire or burning. “We also urge the public to be wise when using water,” Linda Fitrotul said.
