BMKG warns of rain in several major Indonesian cities on Sunday
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to be vigilant for potential extreme weather in the form of thunderstorms and light-intensity rain in several major cities on Sunday. “For the western part of Indonesia, be aware of the potential for thunderstorms in Tanjung Selor, followed by light rain in Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Tanjung Pinang, and Jambi,” said BMKG Forecaster Miftah during a weather forecast broadcast in Jakarta on Sunday. Despite the rain warning, BMKG predicts that most other cities in western Indonesia will be dominated by cloudy to heavily overcast conditions. Miftah mentioned that the potential for cloudy weather is likely to cover the areas of Bengkulu, Palembang, Pangkalpinang, Bandar Lampung, all regions of Java Island, Pontianak, Palangkaraya, and Samarinda. In addition to cloud cover and rainfall, he also highlighted the specific potential for hazy conditions likely to affect the Banjarmasin area. “For the eastern part of Indonesia, be aware of the potential for light rain in Denpasar, Mataram, Mamuju, Palu, Manado, and Jayawijaya,” he added, detailing the forecast for the eastern region. Meanwhile, partly cloudy, cloudy, to heavily overcast weather is predicted to dominate other eastern areas, including Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke. Miftah reminded that this forecast is a general overview of today’s weather.
