BMKG Warns of Potential Tidal Flooding in 18 Indonesian Coastal Regions Until 22 July 2026

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding the potential for coastal flooding, or rob, predicted to affect 18 coastal areas in Indonesia between 8 and 22 July 2026. Plt. Director of Maritime Meteorology at BMKG, Agie Wandala Putra, stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that the threat of tidal flooding is triggered by an astronomical phenomenon, the Super New Moon. “The Super New Moon phenomenon, which is the perigee phase and the new moon on 14 July 2026, has the potential to increase the maximum sea level,” he said. Agie explained that based on monitoring data of water levels and tidal predictions, rob could inundate the coasts of Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, Banten, Jakarta, and West Java. The increase in sea volume is also likely to occur in the coastal areas of Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, North Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and Maluku. He detailed that the northern coastal area of Jakarta is predicted to be affected from 9 to 16 July 2026, including Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Tanjung Priok, Muara Angke, Penjaringan, and Kalibaru. Meanwhile, the coastal region of Maluku is recorded as having a longer potential impact period, with the Aru Islands projected to be affected from 8 to 21 July, and East Seram from 8 to 22 July 2026. BMKG has mapped that this coastal flooding potential could generally disrupt economic activities and the daily lives of communities around port areas and coastal settlements. Sectors that are particularly vulnerable to direct impacts include loading and unloading activities at ports, the livelihoods of residents in coastal settlements, as well as salt pond and land fishery operations. The agency urged the public to remain vigilant and prepare early anticipatory measures, including regularly monitoring maritime weather updates through the official call centre at 196 or BMKG’s maritime social media channels.
