BMKG Warns of Potential Floods and Landslides in North Sumatra

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for the people of North Sumatra to be aware of potential rain with light to heavy intensity that could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides. BMKG Region I Medan forecaster Budi Prasetyo stated that this rain potential is expected to continue in the coming days.

Based on BMKG data, the average air temperature in this region ranges from 13 to 31 degrees Celsius with air humidity levels between 60 and 100 percent. Winds are generally moving from the Southeast to the Northwest at speeds of 3 to 15 knots.

BMKG Maritime Meteorology Station Class II Belawan forecaster Christen Marpaung explained that several atmospheric factors are supporting the growth of rain clouds in North Sumatra. These include areas of wind shear and convergence, as well as warm sea surface temperatures in the western and southern waters of Sumatra, which increase evaporation and significantly contribute to the formation of rain clouds.
