BMKG Warns of Potential Extreme Weather in North Sumatra on 19 June 2026
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for communities in the North Sumatra region to be alert to the potential for extreme weather predicted to occur on Friday, 19 June 2026. These conditions could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding, landslides, and strong winds.
Forecaster Putri Diana from BBMKG Region I Medan urged residents in mountainous areas, the western slopes, eastern slopes, and the eastern coast of North Sumatra to increase their vigilance regarding moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning.
Based on weather forecast data, the average air temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels ranging between 67 and 99 percent. Winds will blow from the south to southwest at speeds of 5 to 20 km per hour.
BMKG explained that the growth of convective clouds triggering heavy rain over the past week has been caused by strong surface heating during the day and unstable atmospheric conditions. The public is advised to continuously update weather information through official BMKG channels and to undertake independent mitigation measures, especially for those living in areas prone to flood and landslide disasters.
