The Minangkabau Class II Meteorological Station of the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding potential extreme weather in West Sumatra (Sumbar) ahead of the Eid 1447 Hijriah homecoming period in 2026. Recent analysis indicates a convergence pattern, or meeting of air masses, triggering moderate to heavy rainfall.

Decky Irmawan, Head of the Minangkabau Class II Meteorological Station, explained that the accumulation of moist air masses has been detected due to the meeting of winds from the north and south above the Minangkabau region.

According to BMKG data, at least 12 regions fall within the red zone for heavy rainfall potential on Tuesday, 17 March. For Wednesday, 18 March, moderate to heavy rainfall is still predicted but will be limited to two regions: West Pasaman District and Pasaman District.

BMKG notes that this convergence pattern causes significant accumulation of moist air masses, triggering massive cloud formation and heavy rain along the Barisan Mountains.

Good news for those planning early travel: BMKG predicts atmospheric conditions will stabilise by late week. “For the period 19 to 23 March 2026, weather is expected to be dominated by partly cloudy to light rainfall conditions. This is positive news for Eid 1447 Hijriah travellers to journey safely and comfortably,” Decky added.

Despite improving conditions, BMKG urges drivers to remain vigilant against slippery roads and reduced visibility. Residents travelling through landslide-prone routes in West Sumatra’s hilly areas are advised to monitor real-time weather information through official BMKG channels before beginning their journey.
