Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across a number of regions on Sunday.

BMKG forecaster Medayu Bestari, in a weather forecast update broadcast on the agency's official YouTube channel from Jakarta on Sunday morning, urged the public to heighten their vigilance against the potential for extreme weather.

"Preparedness needs to be increased for the potential of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the regions of West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Papua and Highland Papua," Medayu said, as quoted by Antara.

In addition to heavy to very heavy rainfall, the BMKG also forecast moderate-intensity rain in several areas. Meanwhile, thunderstorms have the potential to strike Palembang (South Sumatra), Jakarta, Tanjung Selor (North Kalimantan) and Merauke (South Papua).

Heavy rainfall is forecast for Nabire (Central Papua), whilst moderate-intensity rain is expected in Bengkulu, Serang (Banten), Denpasar (Bali) and Mamuju (West Sulawesi).

The BMKG also forecast light rain across parts of Sumatra, Bandung (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Surabaya (East Java), Pontianak (West Kalimantan) and Palangkaraya (Central Kalimantan). Similar conditions are also expected in Mataram (West Nusa Tenggara), Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Kendari (Southeast Sulawesi), Ternate (North Maluku), Ambon (Maluku) and across much of the Papua region.

Meanwhile, thick cloud cover is forecast for Aceh, Medan (North Sumatra), Pekanbaru (Riau), Manado (North Sulawesi), Gorontalo and Palu (Central Sulawesi).

The BMKG also noted the potential for hazy conditions and smoke or fog in Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan) and Samarinda (East Kalimantan).

In line with these forecasts, the BMKG urged the public to remain alert to the potential for extreme weather that may be accompanied by strong winds and lightning.

Residents were also advised to regularly update themselves with the latest weather information through the Info BMKG application, the official website bmkg.go.id, and the agency's official social media channels.

The public was reminded to anticipate the potential for waterlogging, flooding and disruption to activities resulting from the heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across these regions.
