BMKG Warns of Heavy Rain Potential in NTT on 15-16 May 2026, Be Alert for Rossby Waves
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for residents in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) region. Most of the NTT region is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by strong winds, from Friday, May 15th to Saturday, May 16th, 2026.
Weather forecaster at the BMKG Class II Meteorological Station in Kupang, Nanik Tresnawati, explained that this extreme weather condition is triggered by the activity of certain atmospheric phenomena.
“Currently, the activity of Rossby atmospheric waves is being monitored, which has an impact on the weather conditions in the NTT region in the form of the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by strong winds,” said Nanik in an official statement in Kupang, Friday (May 15th).
Based on the BMKG’s technical weather forecast data, air humidity at the 850 to 500 mb layer is quite high, ranging from 70-90 percent. This condition strongly supports the vertical growth of rain clouds in several areas of NTT.
Although most of the NTT region has actually entered the early dry season, which is characterized by the activity of the east monsoon winds, the presence of Rossby waves triggers anomalous weather in the form of a sudden increase in rainfall.
