The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for communities in North Sumatra to be alert to the potential for extreme weather on Wednesday, 24 June 2026. Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is predicted to trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides.

Forecaster from the BMKG Region I Medan Office, Endah Paramitha, explained that atmospheric conditions in the region are currently observed to be quite unstable. This triggers convective processes that support the formation of local but intense rain clouds.

“Be alert to the potential for rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in the western and eastern slope areas of North Sumatra, which could cause disasters such as floods and landslides,” said Endah in Medan, Tuesday (23/6).

Based on BMKG data analysis, several main factors are influencing the increase in rainfall in the North Sumatra region. Communities located in mountainous slope areas and river basins are urged to continuously monitor the latest weather information through official BMKG channels to minimise the risk of disaster impacts.
