BMKG Warns North Sulawesi Public to Exercise Caution Against Extreme Weather Until 15 March 2026
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) anticipates moderate to heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds across districts and cities in North Sulawesi.
“BMKG has issued an early warning for extreme weather until 15 March 2026,” said Karina Husna, Coordinator of Operations at Sam Ratulangi Meteorological Station in Manado, on Monday.
She explained that Kelvin waves are contributing to cloud formation in North Sulawesi. Additionally, there is a slowdown in wind speed due to cyclonic activity north and south of Papua, which causes accumulation of water vapour and supports the growth of rain clouds, whilst a strong local instability index supports the development of convective clouds in several regions.
“Exercise caution against the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, as well as an increase in daily rainfall accumulation,” she stated.
Karina noted that extreme weather potential today includes areas of Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Bolaang Mongondow Regency, South Bolaang Mongondow Regency, and East Bolaang Mongondow Regency.
On Tuesday (10 March), extreme weather potentially occurs in South Minahasa Regency, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Bolaang Mongondow Regency, South Bolaang Mongondow Regency, East Bolaang Mongondow Regency, and Talaud Islands Regency.
On Wednesday (11 March), it may occur in North Minahasa Regency, South Minahasa Regency, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Bolaang Mongondow Regency, Sitaro Islands Regency, and Talaud Islands Regency.
On Thursday (12 March), it is likely to occur in Tomohon City, Manado City, Minahasa Regency, North Minahasa Regency, South Minahasa Regency, Southeast Minahasa Regency, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Bolaang Mongondow Regency, Sangihe Islands Regency and Talaud Islands Regency.
On Friday (13 March), extreme weather potentially occurs in South Minahasa Regency, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, and South Bolaang Mongondow Regency.
On Saturday (14 March), all areas of North Sulawesi are expected to have clear skies to light rainfall, and on Sunday (15 March) extreme weather in North Minahasa Regency and Sitaro Islands Regency areas.
