BMKG urges Yogyakarta residents to be alert to forest and land fire potential during dry season

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Yogyakarta Class II Meteorological Station has asked residents of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) to be alert to the potential for forest and land fires (karhutla) during the 2026 dry season.

“From atmospheric dynamics information, the DIY region is included in the alert category regarding forest and land fire warnings during the dry season,” said Head of the Yogyakarta Class II Meteorological Station Feriomex Hutagalung in a statement in Yogyakarta on Sunday.

The alert is in line with the early warning issued by the BMKG Yogyakarta Class II Meteorological Station regarding forest and land fire warnings in the DIY region, effective from 23 August to 29 August 2026.

Meanwhile, the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the Nino3.4 region on a dasarian basis (monthly ENSO) is +2.77 (July: +2.20), indicating a very strong El Niño.

BMKG stated that the alert category for forest and land fire warnings in DIY covers all districts, namely Gunungkidul, Bantul, Kulon Progo and Sleman Regencies, as well as Yogyakarta City, which is also in the alert category.

Under these conditions, the Yogyakarta Class II Meteorological Station has urged residents not to burn rubbish carelessly on dry land and not to discard cigarette butts carelessly.
