The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has reminded the public to be alert to the potential for high waves reaching up to 2.5 metres in the waters of South Kalimantan, effective from Monday, 3 August 2026.

Utari Randiana, a weather forecaster at the BMKG Syamsudin Noor Meteorological Station in Banjarbaru, stated on Sunday, 2 August 2026, that the highest waves are predicted to occur in the Tanah Laut and Kotabaru waters, with heights ranging between 1.25 and 2.5 metres. Consequently, maritime transport users are required to remain vigilant.

β€œFor fishermen, barge operators, ferry operators and passengers, as well as large vessel operators, please increase your vigilance when conducting activities at sea, as waves have the potential to affect maritime safety,” Utari said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in other areas, wave heights in the Banjarmasin and Tanah Bumbu waters are predicted to range between 0.5 and 1.25 metres, with wind speeds between nine and 14 knots and sea currents of approximately one knot.

Utari noted that weather conditions in the South Kalimantan maritime region are generally predicted to be partly cloudy to cloudy. However, the public is urged to monitor weather updates as sea conditions can change at any time.

In addition to the maritime forecast, BMKG predicts that weather across most of South Kalimantan will be dominated by partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 34 degrees Celsius, relative humidity between 46 and 98 per cent, and wind speeds reaching 15 kilometres per hour.

BMKG has also issued an early warning for potential moderate to heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in Banjarbaru City, particularly in the Landasan Ulin, Liang Anggang, and surrounding areas. This weather pattern is expected to extend to the Banjar Regency, covering Kertak Hanyar, Gambut, Sungai Tabuk, Beruntung Baru, West Martapura, and Tatah Makmur, until approximately 5:00 PM WITA.

BMKG advises fishermen, marine tourism operators, vessel operators, and the general public planning maritime activities to consistently monitor weather forecasts and BMKG early warnings before sailing to minimise risks arising from increased wave heights and changing weather conditions.
