BMKG Updates NTT Earthquake to Magnitude 7.0, Tremors Felt from Makassar to Bali

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has updated the data for the earthquake in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), revising its magnitude from 7.7 to 7.0. The tremors were felt as far as Makassar, South Sulawesi, and Denpasar, Bali.

“#Earthquake (UPDATE) Mag:7.0, 15-Aug-26 04:58:23 WIB, Location:8.33 S, 121.32 E (The epicentre was at sea, 38 km northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo), Depth:10 Km,” BMKG wrote via its X account on Saturday (15/8/2026).

The earthquake was felt at an MMI scale of IV-V in Ruteng, V in Bima City, V in Dompu Regency, IV-V in Ende, IV-V in Labuan Bajo, IV-V in Maumere, IV-V in East Sumba, IV in Kupang, and IV in West Sumbawa Regency.

At MMI scale IV, vibrations are felt by many people indoors during the day, pottery breaks, and doors or windows rattle. At MMI scale V, shaking is felt by nearly all residents, many people are awakened, and objects fall.

The quake was also felt at MMI scale III-IV in East Flores, III-IV in Lembata, III-IV in Adonara, III in West Lombok Regency, III in Mataram City, III in East Lombok Regency, II-III in Denpasar, II-III in Badung, II-III in Bulukumba, II-III in Jeneponto, II-III in Takalar, II-III in Gowa, and II-III in Makassar.

At MMI scale III, vibrations are clearly felt indoors, as if a truck were passing by. At MMI scale II, shaking is felt by a few people, and light hanging objects sway.
