BMKG: Tsunami Warning Following M7.0 NTT Earthquake Ends

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that the tsunami early warning triggered by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the Flores region, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), ended on Saturday morning (15/8). “The tsunami early warning caused by the mag:7.7 earthquake, dated 15 August 2026 at 04:58:24 WIB, has been declared over,” BMKG stated via its official WhatsApp channel on Saturday.

The earthquake occurred at 04:58:24 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), with its epicentre located 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, NTT, at a depth of 15 kilometres. BMKG had previously issued a tsunami early warning and placed several areas under advisory and watch statuses after the quake showed potential to trigger a tsunami.

Based on BMKG sea level monitoring, a tsunami was detected in several locations. The highest wave was recorded in Maurole, Ende Regency, reaching 0.94 metres at 05:27 WIB. Tsunami waves were also detected in Sikka at 0.19 metres, Pelabuhan Kewapante-Sikka at 0.38 metres, East Flores at 0.25 metres, Labuan Bajo at 0.36 metres, Dompu at 0.17 metres, Bakalang-Alor at 0.14 metres, Baubau at 0.30 metres, Bulukumba at 0.54 metres, and Kolaka at 0.23 metres.

Earlier, the Head of the West Manggarai BMKG, Maria Patrica Seran, stated that the earthquake had the potential to trigger a tsunami and that aftershocks were still possible. “The updated magnitude is 7.7. There is a potential for a tsunami and the possibility of aftershocks still occurring,” she told CNN Indonesia in Labuan Bajo on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, CNN Indonesia monitoring in Labuan Bajo showed that several buildings and public facilities sustained damage from the earthquake. Among them was the Jayakarta Hotel, which suffered damage to its lobby, walls, and several tables and chairs. Public facilities such as churches, hospitals, and schools within the city were also reported to have sustained minor damage. Although the tsunami early warning has ended, the public is urged to continue following official information and directives from BMKG and local authorities regarding the post-earthquake situation.
