The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that all areas in ten districts and cities in West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB) are beginning to enter the dry season in June 2026. This condition is reinforced by the El Nino phenomenon, which is predicted to continue developing. A forecaster from the BMKG’s West Nusa Tenggara Climatology Station, Made Budi Setyawan, revealed that the entire NTB region is now affected by the dry season. The ten affected areas include Mataram City, West Lombok Regency, North Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, Sumbawa, West Sumbawa, Bima City, Bima Regency, and Dompu Regency. “In connection with the expansion of areas entering the alert and warning levels due to the increasing number of days without rain, the public is expected to use water wisely to anticipate a clean water crisis,” said Made Budi Setyawan in Mataram, Wednesday (10/6). Based on BMKG monitoring results, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index is currently at a Weak El Nino category (+1.04) and is predicted to develop into a Moderate El Nino starting June 2026. Meanwhile, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in a negative category and is estimated to shift to a positive condition in July 2026. Despite entering the dry season, BMKG notes there is still a chance of rain in the second dekad of June 2026. The probability of rain with an intensity above 20 mm per dekad of 10%-30% is predicted to occur in North Lombok, parts of Central Lombok, West Sumbawa, Sumbawa, Bima, and Dompu. Meanwhile, Mataram City and most of West Lombok have a higher chance of rain, at 50%-60%. Besides the threat of a clean water crisis, BMKG urges the public to increase awareness of the potential for forest and land fires as well as residential fires. Residents are asked not to burn rubbish carelessly or leave sources of fire unattended amidst dry weather conditions.
