BMKG Sultra Issues Warning for Potential 2.5-Metre High Waves Until 9 July

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged fishermen and vessel operators in Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra) to be vigilant for the potential of high waves forecast to reach between 1.25 and 2.5 metres. This early warning is in effect from Monday, 6 July 2026 at 08.00 WITA until Thursday, 9 July 2026 at 08.00 WITA.

Forecaster from the Kendari Maritime Meteorology Station Class II, Zaenuddin, explained that the increase in wave height is triggered by wind patterns blowing from the east to the south. Wind speeds were observed ranging from 2 to 15 knots.

"The highest wind speed is forecast to reach 20 knots, equivalent to 5 on the Beaufort Scale (SB). These strong wind conditions are likely to occur in the waters off Baubau, Wakatobi waters, and the Banda Sea east of Wakatobi," said Zaenuddin in Kendari on Monday (6/7).

BMKG provided specific notes regarding shipping safety risks. Traditional fishing boats are considered at high risk if wind speeds reach 15 knots with a wave height of 1.25 metres. Meanwhile, barges are advised to be cautious if winds reach 16 knots and waves hit 1.5 metres.

Based on BMKG mapping, there are three main water areas in the "Bumi Anoa" region likely to experience significant wave increases. In addition to these areas, extra vigilance is also requested for the eastern Wakatobi waters and the Banda Sea east of Wakatobi. Coastal communities are urged to continuously monitor weather information updates through official BMKG channels to avoid maritime accidents.
