BMKG: Strengthening Australian Monsoon Triggers Strong Winds in NTB

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that the strengthening Australian Monsoon is the primary cause of strong winds in the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) region. Wind speeds were recorded at up to 20 knots, or approximately 37 kilometres per hour. Ari Wibianto, Head of the Observation, Data, and Information Working Group at the Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (ZAM) Meteorological Station, confirmed that this increase in wind speed was significantly monitored via instruments at Lombok Airport. “From our observations at Lombok Airport, a maximum wind speed of up to 20 knots was recorded,” Ari Wibianto stated when contacted in Mataram on Thursday (23/7). Ari explained that the strengthening Australian Monsoon carries dry air masses that affect weather conditions in Indonesia, particularly in the NTB region. Additionally, the presence of a high-pressure centre over the Australian continent has triggered an increase in wind speed while also impacting the rise of high waves in the Indian Ocean. Based on meteorological analysis, these strong wind conditions are expected to persist for at least the next three days. This phenomenon is considered a normal cycle during the dry season. “Strong winds are common during the dry season, as our recorded data from July to August indeed shows an increase in wind speed in the NTB region,” Ari added. In response to these conditions, the BMKG has issued an advisory urging the public to remain vigilant against the potential impacts of strong winds, such as falling trees and disruptions to outdoor activities. Extra caution is also advised for residents living in coastal areas, fishermen, and maritime transport users due to the potential for high waves in the waters around West Nusa Tenggara.
