Bandung – A 3.0-magnitude tectonic earthquake that struck Sumedang Regency, West Java, on Tuesday morning at approximately 06:44 WIB was triggered by local fault activity.

Teguh Rahayu, Head of BMKG’s Geophysics Station in Bandung, said BMKG’s analysis showed the earthquake’s epicentre was located at coordinates 6.74 degrees South Latitude and 107.9 degrees East Longitude, precisely in Sumedang Regency at a depth of five kilometres.

“Based on the epicentre location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake caused by local active fault activity,” Teguh said in a statement received in Bandung.

However, there have been no reports of building damage resulting from the earthquake to date.

As of 07:03 WIB, BMKG’s monitoring showed no aftershocks had occurred.

The public was urged to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable claims and rumours.

BMKG advised the public to remain calm and prepare disaster preparedness measures such as ensuring buildings are earthquake-resistant, preparing emergency kits, and practising self-protection during earthquakes.

“Strengthen disaster mitigation, both structural and cultural, and conduct extensive education regarding earthquake potential, impacts, and mitigation measures,” said Teguh Rahayu.
